MIDAS300 Okidata MC560

The Okidata MC560 is a multifunction color laser printer designed for the small or home office user.  Its functions include print, copy, scan, and fax capabilities.

The design of the MC560 is relatively compact for a multifunction.  OKI has done a good job of cramming a lot of functionality into a small package.  There are some problems with the design, however.  Much of the printer’s chassis feels somewhat flimsy.  The multipurpose tray requires that a button be pushed after loading paper which moves the tray into place.  This is an odd design and a step that could become a problem in an office with multiple users, who will often not take the time to learn extraneous steps like this one and will constantly need help from another employee.

Setup is not as easy as competing products.  While hardware setup is simple, there is no software installation routine on the disc, as the unit relies on Windows to install its drivers.  This becomes a tedious process and may confuse less experienced users.

Print speeds are good, at around 32 pages per minute for black and 20 pages per minute for color.  Print quality is quite good.  Text is sharp and graphics quality is decent.  Print quality does suffer slightly from that of a dedicated laser printer, as this is a multifunction unit, but not to a large degree.

MIDASLONG Okidata MC560

The OKI MC560 includes a flatbed scanning surface as well as an automatic document feeder, allowing multi-page documents to be scanned automatically.

Toner cartridges are quite affordable, and have a decent capacity, at 8,000 pages for black and 6,000 for color.  The toner cartridges are somewhat difficult to replace, however, as it requires lifting up the scanning unit and the printer lid.  The different color cartridges are also not keyed, and are easy to confuse with one another.

Overall, the Okidata MC560 is a good multifunction device with some serious design flaws.  Print speed and print quality are both good, but not enough to make up for the unit’s poor design.
